Keys To Effective Business Process
Outsourcing
Business process outsourcing is the act of using an outside
firm's services to handle certain tasks associated with the
operation of a firm. This can take on several different forms, from
supply chain outsourcing to outsourcing the firm's accounting and
payroll. Different types of businesses will have different needs.
One thing all have in common is the fact that certain parts of doing
business can be handled more cost effectively by
hiring another firm
that specializes in that product or service.
Probably the most common form of business process outsourcing is in
the supply chain sector. A manufacturing company will often hire
another firm to manufacture specific parts that will be assembled
into a finished product. Yet another company is used to transport
these parts from where they are manufactured to where they will be
assembled with other parts to produce the finished product.
A number of bureaucratic duties can outsourced in order to
streamline a company's operations. Accounting services are commonly
hired out to an independent firm that specializes in handling such
duties. This frees the management to focus on the specific goals of
the business.
It also eliminates a number of people from the payroll of the
company. Most only pay for specific services that are provided,
which is often much less expensive than paying employees to handle
the tasks, as well as being more efficient.
It is quite common for an organization to outsource its
customer
service department.
Customers with problems or questions call an
independent call center manned by operators who have access to
information that can be used to provide answers and/or solutions.
These operators may take calls for several different businesses in a
day, with different incoming lines designated for each client. This
is often more efficient for a firm than having a bank of employees
sitting around on the clock awaiting customer calls.
IT (information technology) services are also commonly outsourced.
It is almost always less costly to hire an outside firm on a
contract basis to install and maintain a firm's computers, networks,
and other IT hardware.
A firm that specializes in these services can pay a skilled employee
the rate he/she has earned through education and experience while
charging the hiring firm a lower rate overall. This is because each
technician is likely to see more than one client in a day. It is
cheaper and more efficient than having a trained IT professional on
salary who may not be needed for days at a time.
Business process outsourcing can take on several other forms. Many
different areas of business can be handled more efficiently and with
more skill by hiring the services of another firm that specializes
in these areas. This helps managers to focus their time and skills
toward the core products or services offered by a firm. It also
helps to minimize the number of fixed costs that can add up to more
than is actually needed. These are converted to variable costs where
the firm only pays for services or products actually received.
